I, Wisdom, was beside the LORD as his craftsman,
and I was his delight day by day,
Playing before him all the while,
playing on the surface of his earth;
and I found delight in the sons of men.
Proverbs 8: 30-31
Man seems to mistrust everything that is effortless;
he can only enjoy, with a good conscience,
what he has acquired with toil and trouble;
he refuses to have anything as a gift.
However, the Christian understanding of life
depends upon the existence of Grace;
let us recall that the Holy Spirit of God
is Himself called a ‘gift’ in a special sense;
that the great teachers of Christianity
say that the premise of God’s justice is His love;
that everything gained and everything claimed
follows upon something given,
and comes after something gratuitous and unearned;
that in the beginning there is always a gift.

Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!
